So, you're engaged!  And now comes one of the really fun parts: planning your engagement session!

One of the first questions I get from my couples is,

"Where should we take our engagement photos?"

And honestly? There isn't one perfect location.

The best engagement session location is one that feels like you. Maybe that's a beautiful garden filled with flowers. Maybe it's downtown Birmingham with your favorite city views. Maybe it's an open field at golden hour. Or maybe it's somewhere that already means something to the two of you.

Instead of choosing a location just because it's popular or because you've seen someone else's photos there, I want you to think about how you want your engagement photos to feel.

After you book, I'll send over your Bridal Guide that has a lot of tips and tricks to think about for engagement sessions. From there, we will talk about your vision and I will help you narrow down locations that actually fit your story.

How Do You Choose an Engagement Session Location?

As a Birmingham engagement photographer, I love helping my couples find a location that fits them. So I've broken down some of my favorite engagement session location ideas into three different styles:

Romantic Style. Editorial Style. Personal Connection Style.

Let's find yours!

First: What Do You Want Your Engagement Photos to Feel Like?

Do you picture something soft and romantic? Maybe something a little more editorial and fashion-forward? Do you want your photos to take place somewhere that actually means something to the two of you? Or do you want to mix two different ones?

Before you start scrolling through locations, take this quick quiz to see which style you're leaning toward!

Romantic Style

Soft. Dreamy. Timeless.

If you love photos filled with greenery, flowers, warm light, and movement, a romantic-style engagement session might be for you.

Think walking hand-in-hand through a garden, sitting together under a big tree, dancing in a field at golden hour, or simply enjoying a quiet moment together.

These locations tend to give your photos a softer, more natural feel while still giving us plenty of beautiful scenery.

A smiling couple in white outfits embraces in a lush green park, sharing a joyful romantic moment outdoors.
A mallard duck swimming peacefully on a calm, reflective pond with rippling water and tree reflections.
A couple dances outdoors near a river, man in white shirt twirling woman in white dress on lush green lawn.

Couple smiling at each other in floral and green outfits by a serene pond surrounded by lush trees.
A couple shares a romantic moment under pink blossoming trees in a sunlit garden, dressed in soft spring attire.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens

One of my favorite choices for a romantic engagement session, Birmingham Botanical Gardens gives us so much variety in one location.

Between the flowers, greenery, winding paths, and beautiful gardens, we can create a gallery that feels colorful, timeless, and romantic no matter the season.

Best for: Flowers, greenery, classic portraits, and a timeless feel.

Open Fields & Golden Hour

There is just something about a field at sunset. If your dream engagement photos involve warm light, movement, bare feet, dancing, and the two of you running around together, an open field might be exactly what you're looking for.

This can be especially beautiful on private property, family land, or a farm where we have plenty of space to explore.

Best for: Warm, glowy, relaxed, and romantic images.

Editorial Style

Modern. Fashion-forward. Intentional.

Maybe flowers and fields aren't really your thing.

Maybe you want your engagement photos to feel more like a fashion editorial.

If you love architecture, city streets, interesting textures, modern spaces, and a little bit of attitude, an editorial-style session might be right for you.

These sessions are perfect for couples who want to dress up, explore the city, and create images that feel a little more elevated and fashion-forward.

English Village

English Village is a great option for couples who want an urban feel without committing to a full downtown session.

The architecture, storefronts, sidewalks, and surrounding streets give us plenty of variety and allow the session to feel more like you're spending an afternoon together than standing around taking pictures.

Best for: Couples who want urban, modern, and slightly editorial images.

Southside Baptist Church

Classic architecture, clean lines, grand columns, and beautiful stonework make Southside Baptist Church such a fun choice for an editorial engagement session.

The architecture gives your gallery a polished, timeless feel while still giving you plenty of room to move around and create something that feels fashion-forward.

If you want your engagement photos to feel a little more elevated and a little less traditional, this is a great place to start.

Best for: Fashion-forward couples, architecture lovers, timeless editorial imagery, and couples who want a more elevated look.

Crest Road

Crest Road is one of those locations that proves you don't need a traditional photo venue to create beautiful engagement photos. With Birmingham views, winding roads, and a little bit of that tucked-away, romantic feel, it gives your gallery a unique editorial look.

It's especially fun if you want something that feels more candid and natural while still having that intentional, fashion-forward edge. Put on the outfit you really want to wear, bring your person, and let's make something a little different.

Best for: Couples who want something unique, fashion-forward, laid-back, and a little unexpected.

Oris & Oak Venue

If you're looking for something that feels romantic, elevated, and a little bit outside the traditional engagement session box, Oris & Oak is such a beautiful option.

The venue offers a mix of architecture, open space, and thoughtfully designed details that can give your gallery a polished, editorial feel while still leaving room for genuine, candid moments.

Because Oris & Oak is a private venue, permission is required to photograph here, so we'll need to coordinate with the venue ahead of time before planning your session.

Best for: Couples who love beautiful spaces, elevated details, editorial imagery, and a venue that feels a little more unique.

Personal Connection Style

MEANINGFUL. AUTHENTIC. COMPLETELY YOURS.

And then there's my favorite category.

What if your engagement session didn't need to happen at a traditional "pretty" photography location at all?

What if we photographed your story instead?

Some of my favorite engagement sessions happen in places that already mean something to my couples.

Maybe it's the coffee shop where you had your first date.

Maybe it's the neighborhood where you spend your weekends.

Maybe it's your college campus.

Maybe it's the restaurant where you celebrate every anniversary.

Maybe it's your family's property.

Or maybe it's simply the place where you got engaged or your wedding venue.

These locations may not show up on a list of Birmingham's "best photo spots," but they can create some of the most meaningful images because the location is part of your story.

More Birmingham Location Ideas

Still haven't found a location that feels like you? These are just a few more Birmingham-area spots to consider. There are truly endless possibilities when it comes to engagement sessions, and I'm always happy to help you brainstorm something that fits your style and your story.

A few more locations to put on your radar:

  • Sibyl Temple — beautiful architecture and a timeless, romantic feel.
  • South Highland Presbyterian Church — classic architecture, historic details, and a little bit of old-Birmingham charm.
  • 22nd Avenue Bridge — city views, urban architecture, and a fun downtown backdrop.
  • Railroad Park — greenery, skyline views, and plenty of variety in one location.
  • Alabama Theatre — iconic Birmingham architecture for something a little more dramatic and editorial.
  • Federal Building — those gorgeous white columns make this one especially fun for a classic, fashion-forward look.
  • Altadena Park — a more relaxed, natural option with plenty of greenery.
  • Grand Bohemian Mountain Brook — colorful, eclectic details and an elevated hotel setting.
  • Linn Park + Jefferson County Courthouse — downtown architecture, open space, and beautiful historic details.

And these are just the beginning. Your engagement session doesn't have to happen at a traditional photo location. Your favorite coffee shop, the restaurant where you had your first date, your neighborhood, your college campus, or even your own backyard can make for some of the most meaningful photos.

"What If I Have No Idea Where I Want to Go?"

That's what I'm here for!

You don't have to show up with a Pinterest board and a location already picked out.

We'll figure it out together.

Ready to Plan Your Engagement Session?

Your engagement session should be more than checking "engagement photos" off your wedding to-do list.

It should be a chance to slow down, spend time with your favorite person, and document this really exciting season of your life.

Whether you're drawn to something romantic, editorial, or deeply personal, I'll help you create a session that feels like the two of you. Because at the end of the day, the location is just the backdrop.

You two are the story.
